The town functions under a Town Manager/Town Council form of government. The town council consists of seven members serving staggered three year terms. This form of local government was adopted by the citizens in 1971. Prior to that time, the town operated under a town meeting form of government. The town council’s powers and duties are outlined by Article 1 of the Bucksport Town Charter. The town council appoints the town manager who serves at their pleasure.

The town council operate under the rules that are outlined by Appendix B of the Bucksport Town Charter. Regular meetings are held at the Bucksport Town Office the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Special meetings are normally held the last Thursday of each month. Meetings are televised and agendas are posted at the Bucksport Town Office and Pubic Safety Building as well as on the town’s website. A mayor is selected by the town council members at the first meeting in January, who preside over all meetings of the town council for the ensuing year.

Records of all town council proceedings are kept and maintained by the Bucksport Town Clerk and housed at the Bucksport Town Office. Records are available for public inspection during normal business hours.
